Crossing borders by train is about to get a whole lot simpler. Omio Group, a big name in multimodal travel, just struck a deal to buy the long-standing rail platform Rail Europe. Once everything clears, Rail Europe will join Omio’s family alongside its main booking site, its B2B distribution network, and the popular route-planner Rome2Rio.
Combined, the expanded company expects to handle 22 million train ticket sales every year, linking up with more than 28,000 transport operators and sellers worldwide. Rail Europe won’t vanish, though; it will keep operating under its own brand name so regular travelers and business partners don’t lose touch, all while tapping into Omio’s tech framework and vast route inventory.
For Omio, grabbing Rail Europe opens direct doors to an agent network spanning over 70 countries, backed by nine decades of pure rail experience and a deeply trusted international audience.
Timing is everything here. Global train travel is experiencing a massive comeback, with industry experts projecting the rail market to blow past $300 billion by 2032. European governments are pouring hundreds of billions of euros into modernizing tracks and building capacity, pushing people to ditch cars and short flights for green rail journeys.
Jean-Francois Bessiron, Chief B2B Officer at Omio Group, noted that combining technology and scale makes connected, affordable train travel a reality for everyone, helping the industry move past outdated systems. Björn Bender, CEO and Executive Chairman of Rail Europe, added that both companies are a natural fit. While Rail Europe brings deep industry experience, brand trust, and a global B2B network, Omio offers scale and modern technology.
That deal isn’t fully sealed just yet. It still has to go through a formal consultation with the CSE (Comité Social et Économique), which has to give its official advisory opinion before anyone can finally wrap things up.
Planning a long train journey across multiple countries or heading off on a study trip goes much smoother when you sort out your entry papers well in advance.
Necessary Travel Documents
Having a real paper folder in your backpack saves you a ton of stress at border stops and busy train stations.
- Valid Passport: Double-check that your passport stays valid for at least six months past your final travel date, with extra blank pages ready for entry stamps.
- Printed Train & Transit Passes: Keep paper printouts of your train passes, seat assignments, and reservation details nearby so you aren’t stuck if your phone dies or cell service drops.
- Proof of Financial Support: Put your latest bank statements or financial records into your binder to pass quick border checks without any hassle.
- Travel Insurance & Lodging Confirmations: Keep printed copies of your insurance policy, emergency contact details, and hotel bookings right with your passport.
Visa Interview Preparation
If your multi-country route requires a visa interview, getting your folder prepped beforehand turns a nerve-wracking morning into a quick, straightforward check-in.
To be on the safe side, make sure you have the necessary documents arranged in this order. Your appointment slip and passport stay on top, your full travel itinerary next, bank statements, and housing details. If you’re being asked any questions, your answers should be precise and natural. Explain your travel route, your timeline, and what you plan to do clearly. Be ready to show how your trip ties back to your normal routine at home once the journey ends. Approach it like a brief job check-in: show up early, dress presentably, and hand over your papers in neat order. It shows you respect the officer’s time and take your travel plans seriously.
A Complete Guide to Transit Visas
Knowing typical waiting times keeps you from stressing about departure dates as your trip gets close.
If your visa application is for a short-term transit visa, you can expect a response between 10 and 15 business days after submitting your biometrics and paperwork, so it’s advisable to submit applications at least four to six weeks before. Long-term stays or university study visas take a bit longer, usually 4 to 8 weeks, so aim to apply two to three months ahead of your trip. If something urgent comes up, rush consular services can turn things around in 3 to 5 business days, as long as all your initial forms and health documents are fully sorted.
Keeping your paperwork sorted gives you total peace of mind, leaving you free to sit back, watch the scenery, and enjoy your trip.
